Laser Material Processing

Course Information

The topics taught in this course are:
  1. Basics of laser operation and types of industrial lasers (3 weeks)
  2. Principles of laser material interaction (2 weeks)
  3. Laser welding (2 weeks)
  4. Laser cutting and drilling (2 weeks)
  5. Laser powder deposition (2 weeks)
  6. Laser marking and engraving (2 weeks)
  7. Modeling of laser material processing (1 week)
  8. Sensing, monitoring, and real-time control of laser material processing (1 week)

 

Prerequisites:

Grading Policy: 
  1. Assignments (25%). This part includes writing reviews on technical papers and problem solving sets.
  2. In-class discussions (5%). For some of the lectures, some papers will be posted on the course website. In advance studying the papers and discussing them actively in the class is the main purpose of this section.
  3. Project (30%). Among a list of projects, you may select a topic. The topic can be a research-based project or an analytical one. You will turn-in the project in the form of a paper (about 8 pages).
  4. Final Exam (40%). At the end of the semester, you will be evaluated in a written exam.
